best public transport network in the world

nice vehicles, but the qr code reading process is a joke. full of customers all the day and night, but cannot do nothing with stinky rude freeloader drugabuser homelesses. i think, budapest has the best public transport network, but they should inform the people about suspensions and repairs and delays.

The biggest bull***it i have ever seen. The system is set up to fine people no matter what. They will always find something that is wrong with your travel. No matter if you have ticket or not. And their information system is equal to nothing...AVOID at all cost....idiotic system...be aware if you travel to Budapest!!!!

Pricy, poor roads, questionable driving

Line #100 to the airport cost €6 as of 2023, I would understand this price for rapid transit (i.e. metro, commuter train) like many other cities in the EU, but considering the state of the road to Budapest (tarmac filled with cracks and even potholes) makes the fare a bit pricy to say the least. On top of that, there are no racks for the luggage, which again wouldnt be too much of a problem if the drivers didn't take the curves like a formula 1 race. Its shocking seeing how all the passengers are struggling to avoid themselves or their luggage flying away. Also, it's OK if there isn't a uniform for the drivers here and they want to look casual or even shabby, but I find it somewhat unprofessional to have their headphones while driving (illigal in the UK, Spain, etc). I don't know, maybe it is normal in this country, but then I would expect the price it deserves (<€1 suggestion?).

scam company

My experience with this public transportation company has been incredibly disappointing and frustrating. It's almost unbelievable: during my outbound journey, the controlleerassured me that my pass was valid, but on the way back, another controller claimed that my pass had expired! It's like they're playing a twisted game to extort money from passengers, especially tourists. Clearly, their true intention is to take advantage of us rather than provide a reliable and secure service. This situation creates an atmosphere of discomfort and suspicion, which is completely unacceptable. I don't even contemplate returning to a country where such fraudulent practices seem to be commonplace.

Unprofessional and unfair.

F’ing mongols, we tried to buy tickets inside the tram, like you do in every slightly developed country in europe, 20 seconds after we step in looking for the machine we get stopped, taken out of the tram, and fined 12000 HUF. Absolutely unbelievable how little understanding they have for the situation, and how unfriendly they treat tourists. Completely unprofessional staff who didn’t even speak proper English, were out of uniform, and were unable to properly prove their identity. And besides that, our good intention of looking for the ticket machine was completely ignored, with immediate threats of calling the police. Terrible people in this city, ruining Budapest for us. We’ll go to Italy next year where they are at least humane to other people.

Today

Today, we boarded the tram number 23 from Jaszai Mari ter station, we tried on 2 different machines to validate the tickets, it did not work at all.

There were absolutely no information in the tram either on how to use the machine to validate the ticket or what do to if one is un successful.

One stop before our destination one lady inspector working for BKK wearing a batch 5721
entered in the train. While we were holding our tickets (as honest people), they called us very friendly to check tickets at first.

When we reached our destination, she told us to follow her. Then she stopped being friendly and started being rude. She accused us of being fraudulent and fined us. We had our tickets, we explained everything to her, we told her we are tourists, there is a language problem and we are new to the country and so we are new to the place. My mother showed her bank details on her phone in the app that she had purchased ticket online when the ticket machine wasn’t working on Sunday.

There was a very friendly man in the station who told us not to worry about the validation of the tickets as this can be done on the train as well by the ticket inspector so we thought same thing is valid for the tram as well.

She started to be very rude and agressive, it was like talking to a wall. She threatened us that she will call the police and we asked her to call the police so that we can explain the situation, she pretended to call them but no one came after 15 minutes. We didn’t hear anything from the police even after waiting for 15 minutes. She said she will call her boss and the police again and said police will come and fine you more. Then a lady came who was equally un helpful.

She forced us to pay the fine of 12.000 HUF per person.

If this is how you train your staff and ask them to behave with the tourists we should tell everyone to avoid tram service and not to visit Budapest if possible.

She humiliated my elderly parents and made my mother cry. She had seen we had bought a block of tickets in 10’s and 20’s.

I am a tourist here, I am leaving Budapest. What will i do with the un used tickets which I have already paid for it. Either bin it or give to someone who can use it.

There was another colleague, who was with her though we didn’t understand what they were talking about, we could make out from her body language and voice that what her colleague was doing was too harsh and not right.

We spent more than 10000 HUF on tickets.

Why should i cheat with the three tickets.

Thanks for spoiling our visit in Budapest.

Please modernise your validating machine on the trams so that other tourists don’t suffer like we did.

Fantastic Public Transport

Fantastic Public Transport
Trams, busses, metro very frequent. Used BudapestGO app to plan journeys.
14 days Travel card costs HUF 6300 (£15) used for unlimited travel on trams, buses, metro, works out better than buying single tickets (HUF 370) which you have to validate on the trams, buses, metro.
Very impressed!

Warning - Scammers

Warning !
This company "BKK Budapesti Közlekedési Közpo" are pure scammers, dishonest and very agressive people.
This is a very bad representation of Hungary.
We were 4 tourists that just arrived at Budapest by 37° with huge bags. We bought tickets for the train to go in the center. There were absolutely no informations to explain how it works and what to do with tickets. Also, there were nobody from the information office to explain us.
We went into this old train, we tried on 3 differents machines to compost tickets, it did not work at all. We even wondered if those old machines were not just ashtray. There were absolutely no informations in the train neither.
One stop before our destination, 3 people (2 guys, 1 girl) working for BKK entered in the train. While we were holding our tickets (as honest people), they called us very friendly to check tickets at first then they explained us how the machine works. Indeed, you need to crank up a handle to make holes in the tickets. This is all extremely unclear and archaic.
We thank them for the explanation and told them we just arrived here in Budapest and bought tickets.
Then they told us to leave the train and to follow them.
Then they stopped being friendly and started being rude. They accused us of being fraudulent and fined us. We had tickets, we explained everything.
They started to be very rude and agressive, it was like talking to a wall.
They threatened us to call the police and forced us to pay 8.000 HUF per person. After 30 minutes of arguments, we paid.
From my point of view, this was just a scam of tourists.

Informative website

Informative website, available also in English, besides Hungarian.
A bit difficult to find out for example, which of the Card for 72 hours and the 72-hour travelcard is more appropiate for the kind of trip chosen.
Luckily the tickets automates are slightly easier to be used, grace also to the helpful BKK employess nearby, inspite of hollyday (national day of Hungary).
