EKM going downhill fast
While EKM has been a decent system and easy to use, it has become apparent in the last few years that the quality of software releases has gone rapidly downhill. It demonstrates a lack of development expertise, lack of adequate testing and also a lack of proper specification. It is incredible how bugs are noticed within minutes and it smacks of zero testing, just a suck it and see approach. Releases remain in beta test for years whilst more functionality is continually added, and this inevitably creates problems with the software. No target dates exist for software releases, or at least these are never communicated. Bug fixes are never communicated to users. All this causes extra manual work for users. Time for a change.

Gremlins in our delivery settings was not initiating a free delivery on a product order. Tia was able to find the solution, and resolve the problem very quickly for me.

The recent website overhaul carried out by Ben Pope, Danny and Georgia has been exceptional. Our product is a technical one and as such required a very specific design brief to be implemented. The process from initial concept, to build, to launch has been brilliantly managed by the EKM team members mentioned above. Nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend. Henry Pumps team.

I had been with EKM for 18+years and then,,,,,,,,
I had been with EKM for 18+years, joining when it was still under the control of the founder and very much geared to start-ups with a single £19.95pm fee. He sold out a 4+ years ago and gradually everything just became more difficult as the new owners looked to extract as much as possible money wise. The active 'in-house' forum moved to Facebook and became heavily moderated by EKM. Absolutely NO criticism of EKMPay was allowed and so it slowly died as any critical but mainly constructive comments were suddenly deleted, or not even posted.
Plenty of comments on here praising the staff and they are warranted, eager to help and at times I could tell how frustrated they were as to how their bossses were handling issues. A thumbs up to Tia who was ever helpful as I moved to a dormant site and then exited once we were fully set up elsewhere.
My gripe concerned the sudden introduction of product limits. I was on the Basic tier at £49.99pm and then in April 2025 was advised without any advance warning that my shop tier would be limited to just 3.5k products, I had 4.3k The EKM solution was for me to move to the Standard tier where the limit was 30k, but the monhtly fee was now £99.99 + VAT. Now that's a big jump in price and product limits from 3.5k to 30k and makes no sense at such a random figure, why not 5k, or 10k? The cynic in me can see them moving a slider to see where was the product limit point that generated the most revenue by forcing customers to move up a tier, or start deleting products to stay in your existing tier.
Every year I received an email from Stephen Howells the MD thanking me for my loyalty over the many years and that if I needed anything then just contact him. I did, twice and received nothing by way of a reply to any of the the issues, or possible solutions, I raised.
So, anybody now about to join EKM will only be offered 1 tier at £299 +VAT pm. No longer available to new customers are the Lite, Basic, Standard and Advanced tiers, though existing Legacy customers will still be on them, for now. So it's not an inexpensive start-up option anymore and better priced options are available elsewhere, only you can decide if you can afford £4300+ a year with the VAT for your web site hoster.
So, there it is. 18+ years counted for nothing in the end, though the EKM 'bean counters' probably did me a favour. I decided to move to ShopWired and this gave me the opportunity for a complete redesign and the very latest SW template which is also super mobile friendly and with a monthly fee at just £34.95+VAT with no product limits. A result.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such thoughtful and detailed feedback. We genuinely appreciate hearing from long-standing customers, especially those who have been with us throughout so much of EKM’s journey and development over the years.
There are a couple of points we would like to clarify. Our in-house forum was closed and moved to a private Facebook Group in early 2019. The group has always been moderated, with the guidelines clearly signposted within the group itself, during the application process and within our support guides.
With regards to EKMPay and other payment gateways, as these are financial services, discussions around account-specific payment matters are subject to strict regulations and security requirements. For this reason, posts relating to these topics within the customer forum were not approved. Customers were instead directed to our Customer Support Team, who were able to assist securely with individual account queries and concerns.
Thank you also for your kind comments about Tia and the wider Customer Support Team. We’re very proud of the support they provide, and we’ll be sure to pass your feedback on to them.
Over the past eighteen years, EKM has naturally evolved and our product offering has changed over time. Our legacy tiered plans were retired in March 2025, and we communicated these changes to customers in advance through direct emails, dashboard notifications and detailed support guides explaining the updates. During this transition, we also encouraged customers to contact our Customer Support Team, who were able to help merchants review and reduce older or unused product listings where appropriate, allowing some stores to remain within the product limits applied to the legacy tiers.
While we’re sorry to hear that EKM was no longer the right fit for your business, we’re pleased that you’ve found a platform that suits your current needs and we wish you and your business every success for the future.

Good for start-ups and micro businesses, bad for established online retailers
EKM provides a platform with design templates, a point of contact for troubleshooting, hosting via a third-party, a third-party API and they continuously develop their software. This makes EKM ideal for businesses starting out in ecommerce, as one subscription covers all your needs and spreads much of the fixed costs across multiple subscribers. The downside is that as businesses grow, they will find the restrictions of a one-size-fits-all product constraining when they want agency work, and they will want to explore a wider choice of payment processors to save money, but find they cannot, as EKM limits the payment integrations they allow for monetisation purposes. The monthly subscription price is very reasonable for businesses with low ecommerce turnovers and most add-ons are free, but once annual revenue exceeds £1M, EKM is expensive and restricting. Turnover is probably the key decider on whether EKM is a good or bad choice.

I cannot thank Dean James enough for going above and beyond to help me with the nightmare of the PCI DSS Compliance. The ClearAccept pci support team had emailed to say that the AoC submitted on 19/12/2025, was now not accepted; and instructed that I needed a QSA to ensure the compliance, even though this was not nessessary for a level 4 Company. The nightmare just continued when I was told that there needed to be a scan of the website. The questions asked from the "page bot" I had no idea about, or how to answer, which is when I contacted the support helpline and thankfully spoke to Dean. He contacted the Pci portal and managed to help me navigate through this ridiculous minefield. Now, I am thankfully still receiving ongoing support to help me through the rest of the scanning ordeal!!!...
